Turning a surround sound system into a simple amplifier?

Anyone know how to condense a surround sound system and turn it into a simple smaller amplifier? No dvd player, no video inputs, things like that...is it possible? I know the system was built as a unit to work together, so would taking out certain parts disable other ones? Any tips on working with amplifiers? Any safety precautions?

I guess I'm not sure the purpose of this. Your surround system should have a 2 channel setting so you would get only stereo. As far as dismantling you unit. I wouldn't do it myself.
