Confused about HDMI connectivity?
I am purchasing an LCD TV with 2 HDMI inputs. I will also have an HD DVD player, Comcast cable box, and potentially an Xbox 360 all of which has HDMI output.
My current Denon receiver does NOT support HDMI.
How do I hook all of this up? What benefits will I get out of upgrading to an HDMI receiver? I'm willing to upgrade the receiver but I also dont want to have to turn on the receiver just to watch cable either.
Any advice is appreciated as well as any recommendations on receivers should I choose to upgrade.
My speaker system is BIC Acoustech 5.1.

First, it is not automatically the case that HDMI will give a better picture than Component (See link), so you may be fine simply ignoring the HDMI connections.
In theory HDMI -- as an all digital connection -- should give a better picture, but as stated this is not always the case, and can only be verified through testing on your equipment. As for audio HDMI has no advantage over digital coax or TOSLINK, other than you only need one cable for both video and multichannel audio.
If HDMI is better than component you do not need to connect HDMI to an A/V receiver except to act as an input switcher ... you can connect your existing two devices direct to the HDTV and use the TV remote to select input (and buy an HDMI switch box if you buy the XBox, or use a component input). Finally, connect audio via digital coax to the A/V receiver (you don't need a TV connection if you power speakers from the receiver).
Switching is slightly more complex (particulalry if you buy the XBox) than if you had a 3 HDMI input A/V receiver (although most still accommodate only two), quality will be there ... and you can put off buying a new receiver until models with HDMI V1.3 are more widely available)
