museum pass in paris?
Does anyone recommend buying the Museum Pass for Paris? I will be there for 4 days and although I have been to Paris before, I think I may want to hit up some of the old favorites. Is the pass worth it if I buy it at the CDG airport?
I do not agree with Rilifane's point of view that it's only worth it if you're rushing from one sight to another, and in my opinion, it is worth getting the Paris Museum Pass (http://www.parismuseumpass.com/en/home.php ) even if you're just seeing 2 sights per day that are listed to be covered by the museum pass.
A 4-days pass will cost 48euro, making your "visit cost" an average of 12euro per day. Even entry to Louvre alone costs 9euro, or if you go to Versailles it's 15euro for the day access, etc. Averaging out, the museum pass is a sensible option. And even if you're just "breaking even", you'll be saving time from queueing for tickets at every place of interest.
Another added advantage to the pass is, if you're visiting a particular sight e.g. a museum, but find the exhibition not to your liking, then you can leave and do something else without feeling like you've just wasted buying a full ticket in and therefore obliged to stay on in order to get your money worth back. That is no fun. With the pass, you can move on then to another sight. Every individual's interest varies from person to person. What someone raves over is not necessarily something another person would appreciate. But in city like Paris, you may feel like you don't want to miss out either. The pass gives you that option to try a place out if you're uncertain, and to linger if you find it really to your liking.
In any case, you mentioned you've been to Paris so this is a chance to hit some of the old favourites. In that case, you'll have a pretty good idea what you may want or not to do again, and which are the new places to try that may not previously be featured high on your visit list but are now options to check with, especially those listed to be included in the pass.
With a little planning, it could be very much worth your while. Say, on one of the days, go early to Notre Dame Cathedral and queue for the tower. The ticket to the tower is part of the pass. After that, you can have a quick visit of St Chapelle then stroll over to Louvre which is not that far away, and spend most of your day there. If Louvre is not quite your thing, then just across the river is Musee d'Orsay.
On a different day, Musee Rodin, Hotel des Invalides, Musee du Quai Branly (and Musee d'Orsay too actually) are within walking distance. E.g. if you're at Musee Rodin but found yourself out sooner than you expected, then you can just cross the road to Hotel des Invalides and check that one out. If you do spend a good morning at Musee Rodin, then in the afternoon you could consider going to Musee du Quai Branly. And so forth. There's so much possibilities.
There are certain things that you can do differently. E.g. Versailles would be a day out on its own. The top of Arc de Triomphe can be left to visit till evening, when other major sights are closed, since the arch is open till quite late and you'll get to enjoy the view of Paris by night from a vantage point of view. Remember also that most sights in Paris are closed on Monday but Louvre is closed on Tuesday instead. The tower of Notre Dame is one place where you can't skip the queue so do go early for that.
So, have a look at the list of sights and monuments included in the pass, and check that you have a couple of points of interest per day that you can go to with the pass. Quite often, the tickets to just that 2 places a day will add up to more than 12euro, which is the average daily cost. If so, then I'd say go for the pass. It's practical. I'm a frequent visitor to Paris and even I had bought the pass a couple of times over the years.
Have fun in Paris
