How many volts does a electric range coil burner take?
I have a early 80's Modern Maid Range that takes "cartridges" for the burners. One side only has a grill. I want to replace it with electric coil burners but the price for a modern maid is outrageous. I bought a Jenn-air (on ebay) and modified it to plug in. It appears to work but the local shop said I can't do it and it'll burn out the switches. I have 240VAC going to each burner. The voltage cycles on and off according to the setting of the burner switch. Local shop said 240VAC should not be applied directly to the burner. Anybody have any thoughts on this?

I don't know what shop you talk to, but all elements on a standard north american range are 240 volts. The large surface elements will range anywhere from 1800 to 2100 watts and the small element will be somewhere between 1250 and 1500 watts. If these elements were only 120 volts, you would need a 60 amp breaker for your range (your breaker is only 40 amp) Take 2 small elements at 1500 watts and 2 large elements at 1800 watts (as an example). Turn them all on to high. The total watts is 6600 watts. At 120 volts, that is 55 amps. Now using the same scenario except at 240 volts, the amp draw is 27.5 amps which is consistent with your breaker. 240 volts does indeed feed the surface elements. Hope that helps..
