How can I prevent digital glitches in audio?
I just purchased Sony Acid Music Studio and I've been digitizing some audio on my HP laptop. Most of it comes out fine, but once in a while, there'll be about a half-second cut in the middle of a song for no reason. There's no digital "noise" added to the recording, it just sounds as if I randomly cut a half second from a song and closed up the gap. I checked the master recordings in these cases, and they are fine, so I'm guessing the problem is in Music Studio somewhere. I don't think I'm having RAM or processor issues. I never have any other programs open while recording and typically have a ton of RAM available. Before I got Music Studio, I was using Vegas to digitize on my laptop and never had a problem with recording audio. I'm using the iMic I used previously and have never had a problem with that. Will it help if I record at a slightly lower quality (44.1hz vs 48)? Or maybe don't monitor the recording levels while recording? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Glitches are a result of buffer overflow. Anything that causes a longer delay than the buffer can handle causes a glitch. Plenty of available RAM is great but if it's not used to expand the buffer it won't make a difference. Since different digitizers use different buffer sizes, and handling, it's not surprising one digitizer causes glitches while another does not. If you can find a possibility to increase Music Studio's (output) buffer size that should cure the problem. There may be something about it in its own help files. Things like defragmenting or lowering the quality somewhat decrease the amount of time needed or the amount of data to be written, so with a bit of luck it may rid you of the problem, but increasing the buffer size would enable the same with no quality loss. You may also consider pressing F8 while booting up and switching S.M.A.R.T. on, if it's disabled. This will add extra buffer room to disk read and write operations as well.
