Double layer cakes: How do I put one layer of cake over another without the top layer crumbling to pieces?

Carolathome2099 has the "flipping" of the cakes correct. After you get them flipped in the correct position, let them cool completely before you ice them and put one on top of the other. When I get ready to put the top layer on, I flip it onto one hand, and then flip it back into the other, so it's flat side down, and carefull take both hands and lay it on top of the other layer. I've never had a cake crumble on me.
