Can I still use my home theatre system/DVD player if I buy a new DVD player?

I have a DVD/Home Theatre System that is not providing optimal image quality to my HD TV. So I want to buy a new a DVD player but still use the home theatre system from my other theatre system/DVD player. Is this possible? In other words, is it possible to use the to just connect the audio cables to the home theatre system?

It should if it has the same jacks.
