Emergency Cleaning Fish tank Help 10 points?
Hi my fish tank had ich and my fish die on dec 22, before it die it had mucus from its body rotting to the bottom of the tank. I treated the tank with coppersafe medication a day prior to it dying. I vacuum the tank and suck most of the mucus out and did 50% water change. I refill it with hot water from faucet and crank the heater up, its been steady at 84degrees for the last 4 days. I was wondering what should I do next and when can i add in new fish?? (there is still one clam in there and i think its still alive please also advice what to do with the clam?)
If you have another tank or container that you can put your clam in, then do that. Then drain your tank and clean everything. Allow the tanks, rocks, decorations, filters, and anything else tank related to air dry for a day. Ich cannot survive out of water. Once everything is completely dry, clean (again) and restart your tank and add in the necessary chemicals and a good ich treatment, but no carbon filters. Carbon will neutralize the ich meds. Beware of the meds that claim to cure with one dose or in 24 hours, they do not work. After you have done all of that, you can put the clam back in the tank, but DO NOT put any of the old tank water into the tank. Continue to treat the tank according to the instructions on the ich medication and do partial water changes at least once a week. Also, keep the tank temperature between 84 and 86 degrees, because it shortens the life cycle of ich. I would wait at least 2 weeks before adding any other fish into the tank. Be sure that the ich is gone first. Ich is very very hard to get rid of, so you have to be persistant. And make sure any fish you buy are not diseased. I suggest going to a fish specialty store, as large muti-pet corporations tend to sell sick fish.
