Sound traveling in tube open at only one end?
A tube of air is open at only one end and has a length of 1.5m. This tube sustains a standing wave at its third harmonic. What is the distance between one node and the adjacent antinode.
PS When they say third harmonic do you have to say 3f(1) = v/4L ---> f(1) = v/12L and then find wavelength and divide by 4. I did this and still got the wrong answer
The natural modes of a pipe open at one end support a pressure node at the open end, and a pressure antinode at the closed end. The pipe therefore supports an integral number (n) of quarter wavelengths.
The fundamental has n = 1, and the 3rd harmonic has n = 3. So when resonating at the 3rd harmonic the tube has 3 quarter wavelengths inside it. In this case each quarter wave is 1.5/3 = 0.5m long, and this is the distance between one node and the next antinode.
