What settings do I need to have my upconvert dvd w/ hdmi cord on to stop having bars on a widescreen movie?
I have a Phillips upconvert dvd player hooked up to my Phillips widescreen DLP tv with a HDMI cord. I can't figure out what my settings need to be in order to stop having bars while watching a movie. If my tv is widescreen I would not need the bars. Correct? Please help
You need to have your player output set as 16:9, not 4:3. You also have to have your TV set to a widescreen setting.
You also have to have movies that are 1.78 to 1 (or higher, like 2 to 1) aspect ratio on the DVD -- "widescreen" movies. If you have "Full Screen" and not "Widescreen" movies, your movies will always play with bars on the side (pillar boxing) on a 16:9 display. You will likely always have bars on the top and bottom with "widescreen" movies (letter boxing) due to the lack of standards over the years for movie aspect ratios. Only recent HDTV shows will completely fill the entire screen with imagery.
You can eliminate all bars by zooming the picture on the TV, but that usually means you will not see all of the imagery since some will be off-screen.
