how do you get televisions sound to come through the home theatre speakers?

I have a phillips home theatre running to a Sony TV. The TV is surround sound capable. DVD comes thru fine, TV only operates with it's own sound.

yes, it's true that you have to hook the tv up to the receiver using the a/v (white and red) cables. but then you would also want to go to the menu in the tv and make sure that the internal speakers are turned off. you may also need to turn the volume of the tv up. this would be in the case that the output on the back of the tv is of the "variable" variety. if the output is "fixed" then you would not need to adjust the volume on the television. make sure that wherever you connect the tv on the back of the receiver labeled IN, you have the receiver on that function.
