What is the best carpet for children with indoor/outdoor allergies in a high traffic area?
We have 2 girls (6 and 2 years of age) and two dogs (1 - outdoor shephard, 1 - small indoor terrier). Considering carpet or foam mats for family room in basement leading to outdoor patio and hallway leading to stairs and basement master bedroom. Need economical suggestions that can be replaced in about 10 years with hardwood flooring. Dogs use this area everyday to go outside. Shephard is always dirty. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated
Look at commercial carpets that are solution dyed. (That means the color is added to the nylon while it is in a liquid state.) These are designed to be commercially cleaned regularly and will hold up to the traffic. Too, this carpet can be direct glued to the sub-floor.
Or look at carpet tiles. (They were originally designed for airport concourses and shopping malls, so again they will hold up to your traffic and cleaning concerns.) And if one or two become badly damaged, the individual tiles can be replaced. (This is the more fun solution, as these are available in more interesting colors and patterns, but will be a little more costly.)
