having problems with wiring up a kenwood stereo in jeep cherokee?
I have a 1989 jeep grand cherokee, I bought a new Kenwood Stereo KDC - MP342U, I am having a problem powering the unit on. I purchased a wiring harness for the stereo and hooked it up wire for wire. When I powered on the unit it went into a protect mode. There also is a black wire that needs to be attached to the chassis, when this done my clock powers off, what could be causing this error.
Connect the black wire to the black wire in the Kenwood radio harness, not to the chassis. The factory radio was designed to ground through the chassis; the Kenwood unit is grounded through the black wire.
If you're still getting "protect" messages, then it's likely that you have a bad speaker or shorted speaker wire. Disconnect all the speakers. If you still see "protect", the deck is bad. If the "protect" goes away, re-connect the speakers one at a time until you find the one that triggers the protect mode.
