Klipsch Quintet

What speakers would you rather have – the Klipsch Quintet III or the Klipsch Quintet SL?

Obviously the Quintet SL’s. But, if you’re running a subwoofer, there won’t be much difference.

The main difference between the two is that the SL’s employ dual long-throw woofers in a ported floor-standing enclosure that delivers down to 80 Hz, so you don’t necessarily need a subwoofer. The Quintet III’s only go down to 120 Hz and you really need a subwoofer for the low end.

But, if you have a subwoofer (like the KSW-12, which I have along with a set of Quintet II’s), the SL’s would reproduce the low mids and you can have the sub pick up everything from 80 Hz down (the KSW-12 has a volume control and a frequency cutoff control from 140 to 60 Hz). That will give you less directionality from the subwoofer for better surround imaging for the low mids.

Still, since you can pick up a set of Quintet IIIs for half the price of the SL’s, you can use the difference to pick up a good subwoofer to compliment the Quintet III’s that would give you better sound than just the SL’s.
