Linear Systems - Mikey is 3 times as old as Minnie. In 7 years, he will be twice as old as she will be then. How old is each now?
Again, I know its a linear system.
x = minnie
y = mikey
so x + 3y = ? 2x + 6x = ?
I'm not sure if I'm even on the right track.
Try this:
Mikey (who's current age is represented by x) is three times as old as Minnie (who's current age is represented by y) ->
x = 3y
In 7 years (both ages plus 7), Mikey's age will be twice Minnie's age. ->
x+7 = 2(y+7)
Now you can solve those;
a) x -3y = 0
x +7 -2y -14 = 0 --> x -2y -7 = 0 -->
b) x -2y = 7
a - b -->
x - x -3y+2y = -7
-y = -7
y = 7
x = 3y = 21
now checking:
21 + 7 = 2(7+7) --> 28 = 2(14)= 28
so your answers are: x = 21 and y = 7
