How/what do you use to mount computer speakers to the wall?
I recently purchased the Logitech Z5300e speakers and I want to mount the rear speakers to the wall. What do I need to do this? Also how do you extend the cords? The speakers have an auxillary hook-up, but they hook up directly to the subwoofer.
First of all, depending on the wall type and the weight of the speakers, there are several ways of mounting.
For sheet rock walls, it is best to use toggle bolts, 1/8'' by 3'' long to 3/16'' by 3'' long. They also make screw in anchors that work in sheet rock as well as plaster. For masonry walls you will need a hammer drill and plastic anchors and screws.
As far as the extent ion of the speaker wires, that can be tricky.
If the wires are hard wired, in other words one end is connected to the speaker and the other end has a connector on it, then you
must cut the wire between the speaker and the connector and splice on the extra footage you will need. Most satellite speakers use two wires. One hot and one ground. A good wire size is usually #18 to #16AWG copper wire. Go to Radio shack or an electronic store and ask for speaker wire.
As for the splices, I use "butt spices". Skin the wire, insert the copper into one end of the butt and crimp. Repeat the same for the other side of the butt. Cover with electrical tape. Radio Shack has a crimping tool kit with all the necessary connections.
Just remember to check your instruction manual before you fuck with any wiring.
