What are SPDIF and digital optical connectors used for?
I have various electronic equipment such as dvd player, digital tv box, ps3 etc that have either a "SPDIF" or "digital optical out" outputs on the back of them. I have been curious for a while, as to what they actually used for. Can anyone tell me? 
They are the same and used for connecting from your devices output to receiver input for 5.1 Digital surround sound.
