What is a good outdoor weatherproof [feral] cat house?

Should I buy one or just make my own with some wood or something? A feral cat eating at my house is going to have her kittens soon, but it's damp and rainy and cold and I want her & the litter to be comfortable...

We did up a few out of those knee high plastic snap top tubs you can get cheap at the hardware stores or Target. Use a saws all or tin snips to cut a hole in the narrow end about 10" wide - in the center, so snow won't go in when it piels up. Put newspaper down in the bottom, and then fit a box inside the plastic tub, cut a hole in that which matches the hole in the tub itself (you're making an insulated double layer this way) and stuff folded newspapers around the three sides that don't have the hole in them. Then we got some foam rubber and put that in the bottom of the box, that was about 2" thick, it reflects heat back for the cat. On top of that we folded two old towels and then snapped the top back on. Put it outside facing AWAY from the wind so snow and rain doesn't go into the hole. It helps to position it under bushes so the cat feels protected. They do need to look out to see if danger approaches, don't face the hole towards a wall of the house or garage or they won't use it.

This works well here, we'd have a cat in there in bad weather. It was large enough for them to turn around in and cuddle up in the back, and the hole was big enough for them to get in and out without stress. The plastic tub was almost knee high and two feet long, I think it cost us $5. The hardest part about the whole thing was cutting the hole in the side, it's very resistent plastic. But it works great. Make sure to find a cardboard box that fills the inside as much as possible, you need it for the insulated sides, it keeps heat in the box better than not having the cardboard and newspapers in there at all.
