what happens if i hook a pair of speakers into both A and B outputs?
say i use both A and B left for my left speaker and A and B right for my right speaker. what would happen? the speakers can handle up to 400 watts and the amp is 100 watts.
Some of the other answers are part way there, but I don't think they explain things clearly.
Simple answer: At best you use more wire and accomplish nothing, at worst you could damage the amp.
Details: First recognize that a two channel receiver or amplifier is actually two amplifiers with a common power supply. The terminals marked A (There are two posts (usually red and black) for each of the left and right speakers) are connected (when the A speakers are selected) to amplifiers 1 and 2 ... one pair for the right and one for left speaker. Terminal B is connected to the same amplifiers (1 and 2), i.e. the right terminals of both A and B are connected to amp 1 and the left terminals of A and B to Amp 2.
The A and B switch is simply a way to allow the output of an amplifier to control where the power goes, i.e. speakers A, B or both. There is NO advantage to wiring the SAME speaker to both the A and B terminals and it may cause damage. If you want to "bi-amp" (Google it) you would need to use two amplifiers reproducing the same input signal for each speaker, NOT two connections to the same amp.
The purpose of the A and B terminals (controlled by the A and B switch) is to allow two PAIRS of speakers in two different locations ... e.g. the main room and a second room. The only precaution (other than avoiding shorting out the wires) is to be sure to follow the manufacturer's guidelines re. speaker impedence. You are usually safe if both speakers are 8 ohms or more, but with one or more sets of 4 ohm speakers you could damage the amp if both are connected at the same time.
