my ipod touch will not work with my pioneer stereo model deh 690ub?

I have a Pioneer Premier stereo model DEH-P690ub. I recently purchased an Ipod touch. When plugged into the stereo it just shows read format. Nothing happens after that. Is my Ipod compatible? I have tried the reset button, and it still does the same thing. HELP!!
