How is an elecric guitar recorded?
I have seen videos of electric guitar recording using micing techniques with amplifier, also I have heared of using signal processors direct into the recording machine or mixer. which is the best method? or is there any method that i have not mentioned?
Consider that the amplifier is part of the guitar "system". The amplifier chosen by the artist has its own characteristics that the artist is looking for -- not just his guitar -- and that includes the speaker(s) within the amplifier.
Given that, it becomes necessary to record the actual sound coming from the amplifier speaker.
There are times, when the artist, engineer, or producer does not care exactly what the guitar will sound like. A background rythmn guitar would be one example of a situation where the exact guitar sound doesn't matter, too much. In this case the "line out" of the amplifier connected directly to the recording mixer will be OK.
There are new types of amplifiers and new types of audio processors that allow modelling of specific sounds. These modelling circuits use DSPs and 24-bit high frequency sampling to achieve the desired results. With processors it is actually possible for an artist to pick up a Fender Stratocaster, play a tune, and have it sound just like a big Gibson ES-335 hollow body, as if it were played through some Marshall tube stack; all from the ouput of the Strat. with no amp (if that was the sound they were really looking for; LOL)
This type of recording will be more common in the future.
