I have 100s of old cassette tapes that are delaminating. I need a player that plays and outputs all 4 channels?
I need a cassette deck that can play cassettes recorded in 1 7/8 ips
so that all four tracks are recorded at the same time. Then when the recording is done I would use a computer to flip the one backwards track forward again. I have hundreds of cassettes that are dear to me that delaminate as they play so I only have one shot at recording both sides. Is there a professional deck that I can purchase that has 4 outputs RCA or 1/4 inch?
Equipment exists that will duplicate all 4 tracks of an audio cassette in one pass. One example appears in the first link below and others can be found by Googling "audio cassette duplication". The drawback is that commercial equipment is intended for high speed duplication, which is probably not the best idea for you fragile originals.
Another possibility might be to modify a low speed deck by somehow substituting a 4 track commercial duplicator playback head or even by replacing the erase head with a second playback head mounted at the right height. I seem to recall that the tracks of a cassette were not interleaved (as the 1/4" 4 track tapes were) to allow mono playback. Of course you would need additional playback electronics for the additional 2 channels but that could come from a similar machine. If they were my tapes, I'd even see if there is a way to cut the capstan speed down to 15/16 ips to be as gentle as possible.
