Electrolysis of copper: how does oxidation/reduction take place at pure and impure copper electrodes?
My textbook says that in the purification of copper, pure copper is used as the cathode and impure copper the anode.
Then it says, "when the current flows, the copper moves from the impure anode to the pure cathode"
I'm confused. The electrolyte is copper sulfate solution.
The impure copper anode dissolves as copper ions
Cu - 2e- ---> Cu2+
The cathode attracts the copper ions, which then discharge.
Copper ions plate at the cathode
Cu2+ + 2e- ---> Cu
Remember OILRIG oxidation is loss of electrons, reduction is gain of electrons to help you.
