Is it possible to hook up my stereo to my TV and DVD without a receiver?
I currently have to switch the cables between my TV and DVD, depending upon what I am watching, to get the surround sound. I am just using a basic CD changer/tape/radio stereo. It works great for surround sound, but I would really like to have it work on my TV and DVD without having to switch back and forth and without buying a expensive receiver.

Please be careful!!!! You cannot run a DVD player through most VCRs because of the copyright management.
I have a lot of questions, but based on what you wrote...
If it's a CD player/ stereo you probably are fine using analog audio (that's the red and white audio cables). So, you are connecting it out from your tv? and out of your DVD player?
If you have an "out" on your TV, then connect your DVD to your TV input and then take it out to the stereo. Audio out to stereo in. You'll be able to get your sound that is being played by your tv.
If you mean that you have a cable or satellite box and a DVD and that's what you are switching, then you can get a switcher. It has a few inputs and then one output. I find them at Best Buy or other big electronics store. Usually about $20. You push a button to switch between the inputs. but if you want to switch with a remote control, rather than getting up to push buttons, you may pay more.
I couldn't find any with remotes. RadioShack hasn't been carrying this stuff lately. I've included the 2 way Acoustic Research switcher from best buy.
A home theater in a box with speakers can be had for as little as $150 or $200.
