How to check a power regulator with a multimeter? TV ballist PT-50LC13?
I replaced some componets on my TV's circuit board with a ballist kit. One part is a "power regulator" I want to check it with a multimeter but this part has 3 prongs! My tv has 4 of these, but the kit only gave me 1(need to find the one that's not working). I havn't used a multi meter before so please be specific. Thanks.
Yikes. Opening a CRT TV is dangerous, even with the power off and unplugged. There could be as much as 25 to 36 thousand volts stored in capacitors, or the tube. Come to think of it, you could have just as high a voltage on the backlight of an LCD screen too.
The safest way would be to remove one from the circuit, apply 2 volts more than it should output, and measure the output. For example, if you have a LM7805 voltage regulator, apply 7 volts to pin 1, ground to pin 2, and measure 5 volts out on pin 3 relative to pin 2. If it gets hot, or doesn't show 5 volts, it's faulty.
A properly trained (completed 3 year college technologist diploma) technician may be able to safely test each regulator while powered up, if he or she takes proper safety precautions around the high voltage section.
