What shape base would make the sturdiest tower?
Also, any characteristics of the geometric shapes that make the sturdiest bases. In this particular case I'm referring to a small tower, less than 2 feet tall, so the smallest things make a big difference. However, I'm sure the base sturdiest for that would also be sturdiest for a large tower.
Also, is it a more sides the better type thing or just to a certain extent? Or is it just specific shapes. And also, why?
More sides is more efficient, in some sense, and a round tube is the most efficient shape. However, most towers are engineered, and are designed for adequate performance with minimal costs to build, transport, erect, and maintain the tower.
The tower can mechically fail in several ways. Most common failure is broken guy wires allowing the tower to fall over. Next is buckling, where the tower bends and breaks in more or more spots up the tower, basically causing the tower to fall straight down.
Increasing the diameter of the tower generally makes it sturdier, but also much heavier and more costly.
While circular is in some sense the most efficient, fabricating an optimum circular shape is difficult. It would be round with lightening holes and interior stiffeners. I've never seen one with this design, as its expensive to build.
Many towers are triangular. This requires lots of pieces, usually small diameter round tubing to be cut and welded. Triangular is fairly poor from a structural viewpoint, and are heavier than an "optimum" round design would be, but is an easy shape to make, thus cheaper to build.
I would make a round one, how about from the cardboard tube in gift wrapping, and explain that in large sizes, the stiffening is too expensive, so shapes that are easily fabricated are chosen.
