What is the relationship between channels, amplifiers and speakers in an audio system?
1) Does a 12-channel audio system imply 12 amplifiers, i.e. a channel to an amplifier? Or can an amplifier have more than one channel.
2) I assume it is the specification of the amplifier that determines the number of speakers that can be hooked to it. Is this right?
My questions are with respect to the audio systems for digital organs and for internal amps not the ones that are built externally with speakers.
1. There are multi-channel power amps. They are essentially several power amps built into one unit.
2. No. It depends on how the speakers are wired together. One can wire an infinite number of speakers to any given amp if the impedance of the perceived load is kept within the tolerance of the amp.
It has been found that electronic organs sound more realistic if multiple speakers are used. Ideally a set of speakers (and power amp and pre-amp) for each stop and sometimes several sets per stop - high-range mid-range and low-range. Sometimes ranks of real pipes are set up (but not used to produce sound) to act as resonance and diffusion bodies. Quite frankly, going to this amount of trouble, with this amount of complexity one might just as well get a real pipe organ. It's real, not "Memorex" and the usable lifespan is much greater.
