English question about grammar?
I'm non English native speaker. And I'm preparing for Korean authorized English test, TEPS.
Whatsoever, this question;
The Shanghai Expo, which more than 60 nations attended, was __________ from July 1st to 30th.
and presented choosing answer is as follows;
a. opened, b.to open, c. to be opened
I guess all this a,b,c can become adequate answer for the blank.
what are you think of it?..
All three answers are correct, in different ways.
(a) "opened" is the past tense and is probably intended as the "correct" answer. HOWEVER--->
(b) "was to open" is also correct, especially if the author does not know if the Expo was actually held. The author is telling the audience the Expo was due to open, but implies he/she does not know if it REALLY did open (or if it closed early, due to a typhoon, for example).
(c) is also correct, but I don't like it. The word "be" is rarely needed in a sentence, although we may say it that way in spoken English. Both (a) and (b) show it is NOT needed.
