What is the most accurate way to measure the acoustic frequency response of high quality stereo headphones?
Most of the tests I have found put the headphones on a dummy head with good microphones in the dummy "ear canal". A B&K 4128 is a well known dummy head of this type. But those types of systems seem to respond only up to 10 kHz and we need to measure headphones up to 20kHz. What equipment is used to couple very good stereo headphones to a high quality measurement microphone?
Frequency response isn't the ultimate judge of quality. Any sound above 12KHz is barely audible to the human ear. Above 16KHz is almost completely inaudible, except at high amplitudes.
I like to try them all and buy the best one for the money. I'm still using my Sony MVR-V6 for the last 10 years. They sound great and are around $100.
