Can I turn a car subwoofer into a floor sub/home theater sub?
I want to buy a floor sub. The thing is good quality ones are too expensive. I noticed that on ebay i could buy a car sub with enclosure for a good price. Is it possible to change a car sub into a floor sub with some audio adapters and converters? If so, what would i need to change the red and white audio wires into a 3.5mm headphone jack?
You cannot. Car subwoofers are built to work inside car trunks and back seats where the air is pressurized to a small room area. These make them incredibly loud inside cars. However, if you put these inside a room as a floor sub, the woofer will just flap around uselessly and not do a whole lot of good producing low bass. It'll be directionless, underwhelming, and have no real throw. A hi-fidelity woofer in a real powered home theater subwoofer will have deep extension, good throw, and will just sound as it should.
Also, car amps are 12v. You will never find a 12v power supply for one at a reasonable price to supply the stupid inflated wattages needed to power a car sub. This is a bad idea.
Just suck it up and buy a home theater sub. Unlike the $12 Wal-mart Xplod you found on ebay, a home theater sub will actually, i dunno, work. You can plug it in to sockets you find INSIDE. You plug standard cables that actually fit home audio equipment! The woofers are designed for INDOOR use. It just makes more sense.
Go to Parts-express.com or MCMelectronics.com and look at the subs there. Or maybe buy a woofer and plate amp and build your own. But whatever you do, don't try and make a dumb car sub work indoors.
