Is there a formula for RMS wattage in a multi amp sound system?
Let's say I was to use a 1000 watt RMS amplifier to power a subwoofer or two... Is there a mathematical formula to determine how power is needed to operate the 4 door speakers to achieve an overall balanced sound system?
It's subjective.
The only formula is trial and error.
It has a lot to do with the efficiency of the speakers and the installation, and of course listener preference.
If you have a small hatchback you might only need a couple hundred watts to get all the output you want out of a sub to go with 100-200 driving the full range speakers.
In a well insulated sedan or coupe it might take 1000w to get good output from subs and only 150 in the cabin.
You just have to mess with it and see.
A lot of people that are seriously into this hobby can mess with stuff like this for decades and still never settle on something that's just right.
I've usually run about a 2:1 sub to full range power ratio and it works well for me.
