tube distortion pedal vs distortion pedal vs preamp pedal?

I'm just wondering what's the differenece from the three, btw the preamp pedals tend to have tubes too

i'm not an expert, but I have a distortion pedal and like it a lot more than a friend's preamp pedal. I have the mxr m104 and it is really great-- something i would definitely recommend. it isn't very expensive, perfect for nonprofessionals and has lots of range without being hard to use. go to a store near you that sells pedals (guitar center is great, if you're near one) and try stuff out. they can answer lots of questions too.
