Will using this camera give my photos a vintage and unique look?
I have a classic Minolta XG-1 film camera. I believe it is an SLR because you have to adjust the focus manually. It also comes with a zoom lens and attachable flash. Will using this camera over my simple digital camera (which is a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3) allow me to take unique and vintage looking photos (basically, elements not seen in a digital photo)? Thanks.
I noticed that ALL your questions went to voters and you never chose a Best Answer. I just hope you actually read these answers and we're not all wasting our time.
Anyway...you need to be more specific about what you mean by "unique" and "vintage." In order to take a "unique" picture with any camera, then you need to take your picture creatively. That means looking at what kind of lighting you want to have, and how to compose the picture to create the message and theme you want in your photograph.
SLR stands for "Single Lens Reflex." The way it works is that the camera uses a mirror to give you the same exact view in the viewfinder that the lens sees. The mirror is in front of the shutter. When you take a picture, the mirror flips out of the way right before the shutter opens to expose the film. This is an advantage, because it makes focusing a lot easier and more precise. Also you don't have a problem with what's called "parallax." With simple point and shoot cameras, the viewfinder is offset from the lens by a few inches. Normally, that's not a big problem. But if you're really close to your subject, there will be a difference between what you're seeing in the viewfinder and what the lens is actually picking up. Part of the picture could be cut off. With an SLR, you don't have that problem because you're seeing the exact same thing that the lens is seeing.
By the way, SLR's are NOT the only film cameras that have manual focus. There are countless other kind of film cameras that use manual focus...rangefinder cameras, Twin Lens Reflex box cameras, folding cameras, field cameras, etc etc.
You can actually get different "looks" by using different kinds of film. In general, film does have a different look to it than digital. It tends to have warmer colors, and it also responds differently to certain wavelengths of light. (For example, some films will pick up a greenish tint if you take pictures under fluorescent lighting). Some kinds of film have more saturated colors than others. Kodak made a new film, called Ektar 100, which is great for landscape and architectural photos. It's super sharp, and has amazing colors. It has a little bit of a "cold" tone, and blue and red subjects will really pop out and look vivid.
Kodak Gold 200 has more of a warm look to it. It's not quite as saturated as Ektar 100, but it has kind of a "greeting card" look to it that is really nice with incandescent lighting.
So yeah, each film has its own unique look and characteristics. Now, whether that will give you the "vintage" look that you want...I don't know. What you're describing as a "vintage" look might just be certain characteristics like tone, color balance, etc. Film does have a different look from digital...but you'll have to try different films to get the effect you want.
Also, you need to learn how to use manual exposure (set the aperture and shutter speed yourself). If you don't already know that, then you will need to learn in order to really have more creativity with your pictures.
